There are three basic pile types: cut pile, loop pile and cut & loop pile. Most carpet styles are a variation of these pile types.

Saxony and Plush

Saxony carpets are usually very soft and plushy with even pile height. The fiber is a cut pile and the feel is very soft. These carpets will leave footprints.

Textured and Frieze

Textured carpet has a pile that is twisted and crimped to create a multi-toned look that hides footprints but retains a soft feel. Ideal for casual living spaces with moderate to heavy traffic. Frieze carpets are similar and are usually durable and elegant. Can be used anywhere in the home.

Cut and Loop Pile

Loop and cut piles are combined to allow for a variety of textures, sculptured effects and color combinations. Very versatile. A more casual look.

Pattern Carpet

Pattern carpet can have a loop or cut pile. The pattern can be dyed or woven.

Berber

Berber carpet in a low pile loop carpet that is usually tightly woven and very hard wearing. Chunky loops of different sizes can be present. It can be level or multi-level loop construction. Available in man-made or wool fibers. Hard wearing and good for higher traffic areas.

Sisal

Sisal carpet and sea grass are natural fibers woven into carpet. Wool and other blended sisals are also available. It is often used for custom area rugs.

Commercial

Commercial carpet is a low pile loop or pile carpet that wears well and is useful for commercial high traffic applications.

Shag

Shag carpet is characterized by a long cut pile and low density, deep texture and shaggy appearance. It is a long pile variation of textured/frieze carpet. Great as a custom area rug.
